How to Clean & Care for Luxury Vinyl Plank (LVP) Flooring

Luxury Vinyl Plank (LVP) is one of the easiest floors to live with: it's waterproof, tough, and low-maintenance. But "waterproof" doesn't mean "anything goes." A few simple habits will keep the finish looking new for decades and, just as important, keep your manufacturer warranty intact. Here's how the crew at Floorstock recommends caring for it.

Everyday cleaning

• Sweep, dust-mop, or vacuum (with the beater bar/brush roll turned OFF) regularly. Grit is the #1 enemy of any floor — loose sand acts like sandpaper on the wear layer.
• Damp-mop with a well-wrung microfiber mop. Plain warm water handles most cleaning. For a deeper clean, use a pH-neutral vinyl or hard-floor cleaner.
• Wipe spills promptly. LVP is waterproof on top, but standing liquid can eventually creep into the seams and reach the subfloor, so don't let puddles sit.

What NOT to use (this protects your warranty)

• No steam mops. Even on waterproof vinyl, heat and pressurized steam can soften the wear layer, loosen the click-joints, and attack installation adhesive. Most LVP warranties are voided by steam cleaning.
• No wax, polish, or "shine restorer." LVP has a factory finish and never needs waxing — these products just build a hazy film that traps dirt.
• No abrasive pads, steel wool, or scouring powders. They scratch the protective wear layer permanently.
• Skip vinegar, bleach, ammonia, and oil- or soap-based detergents. Acids and harsh solvents can dull the finish; soap leaves a sticky residue that attracts grime.

Preventing scratches & dents

• Put felt pads under all furniture legs and replace them as they wear.
• Use wide, non-staining floor protectors under heavy items; roll appliances onto a plywood or hardboard path when moving them.
• Choose non-rubber-backed mats at doorways — some rubber and latex backings can react with vinyl and leave a permanent yellow stain. Look for mats labeled "vinyl-safe / non-staining."
• Place a walk-off mat at every entrance to catch grit and moisture before it hits the floor.

Handling the tough stuff

• Scuffs: a pencil eraser or a cloth with a dab of pH-neutral cleaner usually lifts them.
• Sticky messes (gum, wax): harden with an ice pack, then gently scrape with a plastic (never metal) edge.
• Stubborn stains: use the cleaner your specific manufacturer recommends — some brands require their own product to keep the warranty valid.

Sun & longevity

Direct, prolonged sunlight can fade any floor over time. Use blinds or sheer curtains on big south-facing windows. Aim to keep indoor temperature and humidity reasonably stable — wild swings can cause expansion and contraction in floating floors.
