How to Clean & Care for SPC / Rigid Core Flooring

SPC (Stone Plastic Composite) rigid core flooring is the workhorse of the vinyl family. Its dense limestone-composite core makes it extremely dimensionally stable, dent-resistant, and 100% waterproof — which is why it's so popular for kitchens, basements, and busy households. Care is simple, but a couple of rules matter for keeping your warranty valid.

Everyday cleaning

  • Dry-clean first: sweep, dust-mop, or vacuum with the beater bar OFF to remove grit before it can scratch the wear layer.
  • Damp-mop with a well-wrung microfiber mop and warm water, or a pH-neutral hard-floor / luxury-vinyl cleaner for a deeper clean.
  • Because SPC is waterproof, you can be a little more generous with water than on laminate — but still wipe up standing liquid so it can't sit in the seams and reach the subfloor.

What NOT to use (protects your warranty)

  • No steam mops. Waterproof does not mean heat-proof. Pressurized steam can compromise the wear layer and locking joints, and steam use voids most SPC warranties.
  • No wax, polish, or shine products. The factory finish never needs them; they only build up a dull film.
  • No abrasive pads, steel wool, or scouring powder — they permanently scratch the finish.
  • No vinegar, bleach, ammonia, or soap-based detergents. Stick to pH-neutral.

Scratch & dent prevention

  • SPC's rigid core resists dents well, but hard grit still scratches the surface — felt pads under furniture legs are a must.
  • Use non-staining, vinyl-safe entry mats (avoid rubber/latex backings that can stain vinyl).
  • Lift heavy furniture instead of dragging it; roll appliances over a hardboard path.
  • Use protective glides or a mat under rolling office chairs.

Spills, stains & scuffs

  • Spills: wipe up with a damp cloth — SPC won't absorb them, so there's no rush to panic, just don't leave puddles.
  • Scuffs: a pencil eraser or damp cloth with pH-neutral cleaner.
  • Gum/wax: chill with ice, then scrape with a plastic edge.

Temperature, sun & longevity

SPC handles temperature swings better than most floating floors, but you should still keep big south-facing windows shaded to prevent long-term UV fading, and follow any expansion-gap guidance from the installation. Cared for properly, SPC rigid core routinely lasts 20+ years in a busy home.
